What is Worldcoin (WLD)?
Worldcoin aims to create the world’s largest identity and financial network as a public utility, promoting universal ownership. At its core is World ID, a privacy-preserving global identity system. Using zero-knowledge proofs, World ID allows users to verify their humanness online ("Proof of Personhood") while safeguarding their privacy.
World ID and the Orb
To participate, individuals must download the World App, the first wallet supporting World ID creation. Users visit an imaging device called the Orb, which employs multispectral sensors to verify humanness and uniqueness. Orbs are typically operated by independent businesses known as Orb Operators. Images are deleted on-device by default unless users consent to data custody, aligning with strict privacy standards.
WLD Token: Utility and Governance
Orb-verified World ID holders can claim recurring grants of WLD tokens, which may make WLD one of the most widely distributed digital currencies (though WLD is not available in the U.S.). As an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, WLD facilitates governance, enabling innovative models like "one-person-one-vote" alongside traditional "one-token-one-vote" systems. Users may also employ WLD tokens for payments, signaling support for initiatives, or other wallet app actions. Transactions primarily occur on the Optimism Mainnet, ensuring scalability and efficiency.
Founders and Development
Worldcoin was founded by Sam Altman, Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern (who departed in 2021).
