What is Toncoin (TON)?

Toncoin (TON) is the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network (TON), a decentralized layer-1 blockchain developed to support fast and cost-effective transactions within a Web3 ecosystem. The TON blockchain is open-source and backed by various contributors, including the non-profit TON Foundation. Toncoin is used to pay for transactions and services within the TON network, which is structured as a "blockchain of blockchains" to facilitate scalability and speed through sharding.

 

The TON blockchain was originally conceptualized by the Telegram team in 2017 under the name Telegram Open Network, with a planned native currency called "Gram." However, after legal restrictions from the SEC in 2020, Telegram’s involvement ceased before the token was issued. The project was subsequently renamed The Open Network and taken over by a community-led effort, with prominent support from the TON Foundation. The platform's whitepaper includes foundational code written by Dr. Nikolai Durov, highlighting its origins with Telegram.

 

TON utilizes a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus model, enhanced by a sharding structure that allows the network to perform a high volume of transactions simultaneously across multiple subnets (shards). Each shard in the network can operate independently to fulfill specific tasks, reducing bottlenecks and enabling near-instantaneous transaction speeds. This scalable infrastructure allows TON to handle a near-limitless number of transactions efficiently, supporting a broad range of Web3 applications on its network.

 

Telegram endorses TON as its official Web3 infrastructure and aims to integrate it into the messaging platform’s ecosystem. The TON Foundation and Telegram are targeting to onboard 30% of all Telegram users to TON by 2028. To facilitate adoption, the Wallet platform—a TON-based payment service within Telegram—enables seamless peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions, merchant payments, and Tether (USDT) transactions directly within the app. This integration leverages Telegram’s global user base, making crypto payments as intuitive as sending a message.

 

The TON blockchain supports various decentralized services that add value beyond its core cryptocurrency function: TON Storage: Provides secure, private encryption for data, accessible only by the wallet’s private key. TON Proxy: Enables access to TON via decentralized VPNs for privacy. TON DNS: A decentralized naming service that allows users to create readable addresses, facilitating seamless interaction with Web3 services and websites within the TON network.
