What is Litecoin (LTC)?

Litecoin (LTC) is a decentralized cryptocurrency designed for fast, low-cost payments globally. Built on the Bitcoin protocol, Litecoin offers quicker block generation and confirmation times, making it a more efficient alternative for transactions. It utilizes a proof-of-work consensus mechanism with the Scrypt hashing algorithm, which enables faster processing and lower transaction fees compared to Bitcoin.

Litecoin was created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee in October 2011. Lee envisioned Litecoin as a "lighter" version of Bitcoin, aimed at providing faster transaction speeds and a more accessible mining process. Since its inception, Litecoin has gained popularity as a reliable digital currency for daily transactions and peer-to-peer payments.

Litecoin operates on a decentralized blockchain that records all transactions on a public ledger. Its Scrypt-based proof-of-work mechanism is less resource-intensive than Bitcoin’s SHA-256, allowing Litecoin to process blocks every 2.5 minutes. Litecoin has also adopted innovations like Segregated Witness (SegWit) and the Lightning Network to improve scalability and efficiency.

Litecoin has a fixed maximum supply of 84 million coins, four times that of Bitcoin, with approximately 74 million currently in circulation. Its controlled inflation rate is managed by halving events that occur every four years, which gradually reduce the mining rewards and help stabilize its value over time.

As one of the earliest and most enduring altcoins, Litecoin has established itself as a popular option for fast, affordable transactions. Its active development, deflationary model, and widespread adoption make it a key player in the cryptocurrency landscape, offering an accessible alternative for both everyday use and value storage.
