What is Ethereum Classic (ETC)?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain, launched in July 2015 as a smart contract platform enabling decentralized applications (DApps). With its native token, ETC, the network prioritizes preserving its foundational principles of decentralization and immutability. Ethereum Classic emerged following a significant divergence from Ethereum (ETH), with the two networks maintaining separate philosophies and technical trajectories.
Ethereum Classic came into existence after the controversial DAO hack in 2016, where attackers exploited vulnerabilities in the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) to steal 3.6 million ETH. In response, the Ethereum community implemented a hard fork to reverse the hack and restore the stolen funds. Ethereum Classic, however, opted to maintain the original chain, emphasizing the immutability of the blockchain and rejecting the reversal. This decision solidified its identity as the legacy chain of Ethereum, originally created by Vitalik Buterin.
Although they share a common origin, Ethereum Classic and Ethereum have diverged significantly. Ethereum transitioned to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism after "The Merge" in September 2022, focusing on scalability and energy efficiency. In contrast, Ethereum Classic continues to use the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, valuing its original architecture and decentralization. Additionally, Ethereum has a more centralized governance structure, while Ethereum Classic embraces a community-driven, decentralized decision-making process.
Ethereum Classic operates on the principle of a "do-ocracy," where anyone can contribute to its development. The absence of an official core team reinforces its commitment to permissionless and decentralized governance. Its philosophy prioritizes immutability, resisting changes that could undermine the network's integrity. Ethereum Classic’s approach attracts users and developers seeking a blockchain that adheres strictly to its original ethos.
As a smart contract network, Ethereum Classic supports the creation and deployment of decentralized applications and serves as a platform for innovation. Despite challenges, including competition from Ethereum and security incidents, Ethereum Classic continues to uphold its legacy as a blockchain focused on decentralization and immutability. Its commitment to maintaining the original Ethereum vision positions it as a distinct and enduring player in the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.
