What is Bitcoin Cash (BCH)?

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) is a decentralized, peer-to-peer electronic cash system designed to enable fast, low-cost transactions on a global scale. It emerged in 2017 as a hard fork of Bitcoin (BTC) to address scalability issues, allowing for larger block sizes to accommodate more transactions per block. By offering features such as micro fees, high-speed payments, and enhanced privacy options, Bitcoin Cash aims to fulfill the vision outlined in Bitcoin's original whitepaper as a truly decentralized electronic cash system.

Bitcoin Cash was born from a heated debate within the Bitcoin community regarding scaling solutions. As transaction volumes on the Bitcoin network grew, higher fees and slower processing times became common. A faction advocating for larger block sizes proposed a hard fork to increase the network's capacity. This led to the split on August 1, 2017, creating Bitcoin Cash as a separate blockchain. The story didn’t end there; in November 2018, Bitcoin Cash underwent another contentious fork, resulting in the creation of Bitcoin SV (BSV) and the continuation of Bitcoin Cash under the Bitcoin ABC implementation.

One of Bitcoin Cash's standout features is its larger block size compared to Bitcoin, which allows it to process more transactions quickly and at lower fees. This scalability makes BCH suitable for everyday payments and microtransactions, such as tipping or small online purchases. Moreover, Bitcoin Cash supports simplified smart contracts and ecosystem applications, broadening its use case beyond simple payments. Tools like CashShuffle and CashFusion enhance BCH’s privacy features, allowing users to transact more discreetly.

Like Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash has a capped supply of 21 million coins, ensuring its scarcity. Transactions on the network are fast and inexpensive, typically costing less than a tenth of a cent. These attributes make BCH a practical option for everyday use, cross-border trade, and remittances, reducing costs and settlement times. Its low transaction fees also support innovative use cases, such as incentivizing app users or tipping content creators, fostering the growth of micro-transaction economies.

Bitcoin Cash positions itself as a versatile cryptocurrency with real-world applications. It can be used for peer-to-peer payments, merchant transactions in-store and online, and even for enabling private payments. By supporting new economic models and bridging the gap between digital currency and practical usability, Bitcoin Cash aspires to become a global sound money system that aligns with the original vision of a decentralized, permissionless digital currency.
